Everything we do, from composting waste and stewarding the soil to regenerative farming techniques and carefully selecting varieties is centered on our commitment to organically grown vegetables and making an environmentally positive contribution.
My husband, Reg, grew up farming in Essex County. I grew up in BC surrounded by orchards, vineyards and farms and loved to grow my own vegetables. Twenty-four years later, we have transformed our little parcel of land on the edge of Cottam into
Nearly Acre Farm.
The environmental impacts of food supply have been a focus in the media a lot recently. From long distance transportation emissions to fertilizer runoff to light pollution, large scale agriculture impacts the planet and our lives in so many ways. By supporting responsible local farmers, you help reduce the environmental impact.
Help grow the veg and eat it too! Purchase a Farm Share and receive 5% off vegetable purchases and free local delivery service. The majority of the farm’s expenses such as compost and soil prep, infrastructure, tool maintenance, and seeds come at the beginning of the season so by opting for a Farm Share, you are investing in the growth and maintenance of the farm. Available until May 31st.
We know that life is rarely predictable and for many people, having complete flexibility in purchasing is important so if an upfront expense doesn’t fit your budget, you can still enjoy local organically grown vegetables whenever you like. Available for home delivery for a small flat fee or you can take advantage of one of our pickup locations free of charge.
Just as our vegetables start with a tiny seed that grow to abundance with nurturing and patience, so too does our commitment to the environment.
Our no-till regenerative organic practices keeps the focus on soil health. Healthy soil reduces the impacts of pests and disease by growing strong healthy plants. Strong healthy plants not only produce the finest quality veg for your family, it also provides a diverse ecosystem for beneficial insects and pollinators. On top of that, by developing a healthy soil biome, we can enable the plants to sequester carbon from the atmosphere in the not so distant future.
We are committed to reducing our dependence on plastics. Although a complete abandonment of plastic use isn’t viable at this point in time and technology, we’ve eliminated much of the common use plastics used in agriculture. By soil blocking for propagation, using paper pots for up-potting and when plastics are needed, investing in better quality which can be reused for many years, we have significantly reduced our dependence.
As we grow, the environmental initiatives we began with will grow right along side of us. Our plans include sourcing biodegradable packaging, rainwater collection systems, EV delivery vehicle and even solar to offset Nearly Acre Farm’s electrical needs. Every little step leads to another.
Regular home delivery and pick-up locations are available in your area!
